INTRODUCTION

Vaginismus is a condition when the muscles around the vagina tighten involuntarily with no abnormalities in the genital organ. This condition prevents any vaginal penetration.

When patients try to insert any object like tampon, penis or speculum into the vagina, it tightens up because of an involuntary contraction of muscles around the vagina. This condition can lead to generalized muscle spasms, and pain.

It can lead to emotional distress because intercourse may be painful, women generally fear it. The fear of pain makes vaginal muscle even tighter and causes increased pain when sexual intercourse is attempted. A reflex reaction develops when the vagina is pressed or sometimes even just touched, the vaginal muscles automatically tighten. Most women cannot even tolerate the insertion of a tampon.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT FOR VAGINISMUS

Ayurveda is a traditional and ancient form of medicine. The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain a healthy person’s health and to alleviate disorders of the diseased. Ayurveda believes in maintaining a balance between mind, body, and soul. This balance can be maintained by the balance between Dosh, Dhatu, and Agni. Dosha is of three types Vata (Air), Pitta (fire), Kapha (water). The Balance between these three dosha is known as a healthy state of body but the imbalance between this Dosha causes various problems.

According to Ayurveda, Vaginismus is considered in the ‘Yonivayapad’. Acharya Charaka has written that when a woman having a predominance of Pitta (either due to Pitta Prakriti or consumption of diet which aggravates Pitta) withholds her natural urge of sneezing and eructation at the time of coitus, then the vitiated Pitta,  along with Vayu reaches Yoni (reproductive system) and produces its abnormalities. The Yoni (Vagina) becomes inflamed and tender due to which there is pain in lumbosacral and groin region.

  2. Secondary Vaginismus: This develops after a woman has already experienced normal sexual intercourse. It can occur at any stage of life, such as an infection, menopause, a traumatic event, relationship issues, surgery, or childbirth.
