Ayurvedic Treatment of Klebsiella Species Bacteria -- UTI

ABOUT KLEBSIELLA UTI

Klebsiella UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) is one of the several infections which are caused by a 'superbug' called Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterium. A Urinary Tract Infection refers to any infection of the urethra, bladder or kidneys.

Klebsiella UTI and other Klebsiella infections are characteristically 'nosocomial' infections, which are contracted in a hospital or a healthcare facility. The risk of contracting Klebsiella infections is high for people have a weakened immune system, either from being sick or from undergoing medical interventions due to a health issue. As such, some of the common factors which can trigger the development of Klebsiella infections are mechanical ventilators, indwelling tubes for draining urine, open wounds, and burns.

Besides Urinary Tract Infections, some of the other diseases which are caused by the Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterium include:

  • Bloodstream infections
  • Wound infections
  • Surgical site infections
  • Community-acquired Pneumonia
  • Meningitis

In addition, some of the other clinical syndromes associated with Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterium are: rhinoscleroma and ozena, colonization, and chronic genital ulcerative disease.

So far as Klebsiella UTI is concerned, these urinary tract infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae -- which is not an airborne bacterium -- cannot be clinically differentiated from other UTIs which are caused by other common organisms.

According to Ayurveda, Klebsiella UTI and other Urinary tract infections are linked to the imbalance of 'Pitta' dosha.

HOW KLEBSIELLA INFECTIONS SPREAD

The situations which can trigger the spread of Klebsiella UTI and other Klebsiella infections -- or increase the risk of these infections -- are:

  • Hospitalization (particularly admission to an Intensive Care Unit)
  • Use of contaminated medical equipment
  • Use of contaminated intravenous catheters/urinary catheters
  • Use of antibiotics over a long period of time
  • Inadequate infection control practices
  • Major surgery or severe illness
  • Immunocompromised health conditions (for e.g. diabetes, alcoholism)
  • Antimicrobial therapy
  • Direct person-to-person contact (for e.g. when a wound is touched by someone with contaminated hands).

Overall, Klebsiella infections usually spread when Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterium gains access to a person's body either by direct inoculation via breached epithelial surfaces or following aspiration of oropharyngeal organisms.

SYMPTOMS OF KLEBSIELLA INFECTIONS

The symptoms of Klebsiella UTI and some of the other Klebsiella infections mainly depend on the infection site; and can, hence, differ from one individual to another. However, it is significant to note that the symptoms of Klebsiella infections are similar to the symptoms of the same diseases which are caused by other microbes.

The symptoms of Klebsiella UTI are:

  • Frequent urination
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Strong smell in urine
  • Urine of red or light pink colour
  • Colicky abdominal pain
  • Low back pain
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy.

Some of the common symptoms of other Klebsiella infections are:

  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Rash
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Breathing problems/Shortness of breath
  • Cough (with bloody, yellow, or green mucous)
  • Light-headedness
  • Confusion
  • Changes in mental state.

TREATMENT OF KLEBSIELLA UTI

Treatment for Klebsiella UTI can vary, because it is based on the severity of the infection and the medication used. Appropriate antimicrobial treatment of Klebsiella UTI is started only after the laboratory identification of a substantial number of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacterium, in order to confirm that the symptoms of the infection are linked to the bacteria rather than to other organisms/factors.

For effective management of the symptoms of Klebsiella UTI, renowned Ayurvedic experts at Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company have prepared some beneficial herbal formulations. To prepare these formulations, 100% pure and natural best-quality herbs are used, in accordance with the principles of Ayurveda.
