Kalpataru Ras - Ingredients, Preparation, Medicinal Properties, Indications, Benefits & Dosage

REFERENCE - Rastantrasaar evum Siddhpryog Sangreh/ Chapter-Jwar /8th formulation

ABSTRACT

In the modern era, respiratory illnesses such as recurrent cough, asthma‑like dyspnea, chronic catarrh, low‑grade fevers, and Vata‑Kapha headaches are strongly linked to pollution, smoking, viral infections, and impaired immunity. Allopathic antipyretics, bronchodilators, and antibiotics often give only transient relief, with risks of resistance, gastric irritation, and systemic side effects when used repeatedly. Ayurveda views these conditions as Vata and Kapha vitiation in Pranavaha channels (channels related to respiration and vital life force), Udakavaha channels (channels responsible for water balance and fluid regulation), Annavaha channels (channels related to food transport and digestion), causing accumulation of mucus, lowered digestive fire, and obstruction in the pathways of respiration. Kalpataru Ras is a classical herbo‑mineral formulation designed to balance three dosha (with emphasis on Vata‑Kapha), liquefy and expel Kapha, rekindle digestive fire, and act as a rejuvenating medicine for the respiratory and systemic channels. Through its potent Rasadravya base, Kapha‑destroying spices, and select botanicals, it supports relief in fever, cough, asthma, chronic mucus states, and Kapha‑dominant unconscious states. Let's know about this Ayurvedic formulation in detail.

INTRODUCTION

Kalpataru Ras is a classical tablet formulation, primarily indicated in Vata‑Kapha related fever and Kapha‑dominant respiratory and head–neck disorders. The name “Kalpataru” evokes the wish‑fulfilling tree, underlining its wide‑spectrum utility in Kapha‑loaded clinical pictures involving fever, cough, asthma‑like breathlessness, chronic catarrh, excess salivation, and delirium. The formulation employs a Kajjali base (purified mercury and sulphur) augmented with other ingredients, as well as selected herbal ingredients like Moringa flowers and opium. This combination targets by dispersing thick Kapha, enhancing digestive fire, and stabilizing Vata in severe disease states. Clinically it is positioned as an antipyretic, expectorant, bronchodilatory, and nervine‑support formulation with rejuvenating properties overtones for chronic respiratory morbidity.

INGREDIENT DESCRIPTION

Shuddha Parad (Purified Mercury)

Purified mercury, combined with sulphur as Kajjali, forms the Rasadravya backbone of Kalpataru Ras, providing powerful Yogavahi (bio‑enhancing) and Sukshma (fineness quality), Vyavayi Guna (property to spread quickly throughout the body and begin to work before they get digested) for deep Srotas penetration. In its sulfide form, it potentiates co‑ingredients, supports digestive fire, and exerts Rasayana influence over Rasavaha and Pranavaha Srotas (microchannels associated with circulatory fluids and respiratory pathways), thus sustaining antipyretic, antitoxic, and systemic immunomodulatory actions in chronic and relapsing fevers.

Shuddha Gandhak (Purified Sulphur)

Purified sulphur intensifies the piercing, hot potency, and Kapha‑pacifying properties of Kajjali, helping liquefy and expel stubborn Kapha from respiratory passages. Sulphur compounds have anti parasitic attributes, thereby assisting in reducing inflammatory swelling in the airways, improving skin and mucosal immunity, and supporting detoxification in Kapha‑rich fever and respiratory illness.

Shuddha Vatsanabha (Purified Aconite)

After rigorous detoxification, Vatsanabha contributes hot potency, and pain killer effects with strong Vata‑Kapha pacifying, particularly in severe fevers with chills, body ache, and respiratory distress. Its processed alkaloids (greatly detoxified aconitine derivatives) stimulate circulation, thermoregulation, and Agni, acting as a key driver in breaking stubborn, Vata‑Kapha dominant fever patterns while aiding in pain relief.

Shuddha Manashila (Purified Realgar)

Purified Manashila, an arsenic sulphide preparation, acts with piercing and hot potency, enhancing Kapha‑piercing and anti-parasitic effects in Kalpataru Ras. It supports deep channel cleansing, reduces chronic mucus accumulation in the respiratory tract, and helps clear infection‑prone Kapha deposits. Its minute, detoxified active constituents contribute to nerve stabilization in severe fever states with unconsciousness  and delirium, while supporting detoxification of toxins and Kapha morbidities.

Tankan Bhasam (Borax)

Tankan Bhasam (purified and calcined borax) acts as a powerful scrapping and Kapha‑drying properties with hot potency and pungent taste, aiding in dissolving and expelling thick phlegm from the upper and lower respiratory tract. It enhances the bioavailability of other ingredients, improves voice clarity, and supports the management of hoarseness, chronic catarrh, and throat congestion. Its mild antiseptic and anti‑inflammatory properties contribute to mucosal cleansing and relief in Kapha‑dominant respiratory disorders and throat ailments.

Swaran Makshik (Ore Of Copper And Iron Pyrite)

Swaran Makshik, a copper‑iron pyrite ore used in this medicine, imparts qualities that intensify digestive fire and aid in liquefying and expelling sticky Kapha from the respiratory channels. When properly detoxified and calcined, it exhibits iron‑like Vata‑Kapha pacifying and anti-inflammatory actions, assisting in reducing inflammation in both the respiratory tract and joints. Its presence in Kalpataru Ras enhances the penetration of the medicine base into respiratory and circulatory microchannels, supporting anti‑inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and Kapha‑reducing effects in chronic fevers, cough, asthma‑like breathlessness, and other Kapha‑dominant respiratory disorder.

Shunthi (Dry Ginger)

Dry ginger adds strong antipyretic, and diaphoretic effects, useful in fevers with body ache and Kapha‑laden colds. Gingerols and shogaols aid in reducing myalgia, stimulating sweating, and clearing ama, thus enhancing overall efficacy in respiratory fever.

Pippali (Piper longum)

Pippali delivers Deepana‑Pachana, Rasayana, and Kapha‑Vata‑pacifying, especially tailored for kasa–shwasa and ama‑janya jvara (fevers related to respiratory pathway and toxin induced fever). Phytoconstituents like piperlongumine and piperine support bronchodilation, anti‑inflammatory and immunomodulatory actions, improving expectoration and respiratory resilience.

Maricha (Piper nigrum)

Maricha is a classical Kapha‑chettana spice with ushna virya and Laghu, Ruksha Guna, cutting through thick phlegm and enhancing bioavailability of other ingredients. Piperine‑rich black pepper promotes digestion, reduces bloating, and supports antitussive and mucolytic effects, making Kalpataru Ras suitable where cough, heaviness, and poor appetite coexist.

METHOD OF PREPARATION

Purified mercury and purified sulphur are first triturated together to form a smooth, lustrous Kajjali, ensuring complete blackness and absence of grittiness. To this, fine powders of shuddha Vatsanabha, shuddha Manashila, tankan, and swarna makshik and compiled spice powders like Pippali, Maricha, and Shunthi are added and triturated thoroughly to achieve uniform mixing, suitable for tablet formation. The finished material is then rolled or punched into small tablets corresponding to approximately 1–2 ratti per unit (125-250 mg), dried in shade, and stored in well‑closed containers away from moisture and direct sunlight.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES

Vata–Kapha Jvara (Fever With Cold, Body Ache, And Heaviness)

Kalpataru Ras given with ginger juice and honey helps reduce fever, clear chills, relieve myalgia, and restore appetite by rekindling digestive fire and dispersing Vata–Kapha from the respiratory pathways.

Kasa–Shwasa (Cough, Breathlessness, Asthma‑Like States)

Its Kapha‑cheddana spices and Rasadravya base assist in liquefying thick mucus, facilitating expectoration, reducing wheeze, and easing tightness in the chest in chronic or recurrent respiratory problems.

Pratishyaya And Chronic Catarrh

In rhinitis and catarrhal states with nasal blockage and post‑nasal drip, regular use promotes drainage, reduces heaviness in the head, and relieves Kapha‑induced headaches.

Hiccup, Excessive Salivation, And Throat Disorders

Minute doses help in spasmodic hiccups, ptyalism, and Kapha‑clogged throat, restoring normal swallowing and speech.

Murcha, Pralapa In Severe Kapha States

Classical description includes its use as nasya in unconsciousness with Kapha obstruction and tightly clenched jaws; nasal administration can help revive consciousness and clear obstructive Kapha from upper airways.

IMPACT ON DOSHA

Kalpataru Ras primarily pacifies Vata and Kapha dosha while maintaining Pitta within physiological range through kindling digestive fire and channel cleansing. Its hot, piercing and light profile melts and evacuates excess Kapha from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, stabilizing disturbed Vata that manifests as breathlessness, chills, and delirium in severe fever.
