Ayurvedic Treatment of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - Symptoms, Causes, Diet & Lifestyle

Due to busy and hectic lifestyle, people suffer from different type of disorders like stress and many digestive disorders. Nowadays people use to eat unhealthy diet and face many health issues. Stress is major cause of digestive problems. Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common digestive disorder which may be due to stress, lifestyle and unhealthy diet. Ayurveda provides herbal treatment for the IBS with the help of herbs without causing any side effects.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) - It is also known as spastic colon, irritable colon, mucous colitis and spastic colitis. It is inflammatory condition of small intestine which is characterized by abdominal pain, discomfort, irregular bowel movement (hard or soft bowels).

As per Ayurveda, IBs is classified as Grahani roga. Grahani is a part of GI system which is main site of agni (Enzymes). These enzymes play a vital role in the digestion of food. Grahani is the place which holds food for digestion and absorption. Agni plays an important role in digestion of food. Vitiation of agni results in madagni which is responsible for the formation of Ama (toxins) which is responsible for various diseases. There are three vital energies present in the body which are responsible for health. According to different energies IBS is classified into different categories:

  • Vata Grahani It is due to imbalance of vata dosha in body which is characterized by constipation.
  • Pitta Grahani It results in the imbalance of pitta dosha which results in diarrhea.
  • Kapha Grahani This results in kapha dosha imbalance.
  • Tridosha Grahani It involves all three dosha i. vat, pitta and kapha.

WHAT CAN BE THE CAUSES?

Cause of the disease may vary from person to person. Some people have sensitive intestines. It is combination of various factors like stress, hereditary, inflammatory, eating habits, depression, and lifestyle.

As per Ayurvedic cause, they may be  like fasting, excessive food intake, cold food intake, heavy food intake, dry and junk food, suppression of urges, improper sleep habits, anger, grief, fear, low digestion strength, travel, change in season, all being contributory factors to this disease.

WHAT CAN BE THE SYMPTOMS?

Common signs and symptoms of IBS are –

  • Nausea
  • Lack of appetite
  • Delayed digestion
  • Burning sensation
  • Bloating, distention of abdomen
  • Excessive thirst
  • Fatigue, giddiness
  • Gurgling sound in stomach
  • Hard and soft stools.

According to Ayurveda, the signs and symptoms are according to dosha involved in IBS-

  • Vata predominant IBS – Abdominal pain, increased frequency of stool, altered bowel habit, headache, distention of abdomen, debility, chest pain etc.
  • Pitta predominant IBS – Burning sensation in the chest, belching, headache etc.
  • Kapha pre-dominant IBS – Mucus in stool, feeling of incomplete evacuation of the bowel, vomiting, nausea, heaviness of abdomen, flatus.
  • Tridosha predominant IBS- Gurgling sound in abdomen, bowel with mucus, constant urge to pass stools, intermittent episodes, and increase in frequency of bowel.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF IBS

Ayurveda mainly focus on the restoration of the functions of digestive system by balancing all three energies i.e. vata, pitta and kapha. Ayurveda mainly uses the herbs which help to remove the toxins from the body. As stress is major cause of this problem, treatment consists of lifestyle and diet guidance. 1. Digestion Support

These are herbal capsule offered by Planet Ayurveda. As the name indicates these help to support the healthy digestive system. These contains the standardized extract of different herbs:

  • Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula) - It helps to clear bowel and prevents the formation of gas. It acts as very effective herb for constipation, flatulence and good for digestive system.
  • Sounf (Fenniculum vulgare) - It is common used spice in kitchen that provides relief from gas, acidity.
  • Bhbhitaki (Terminalia bellerica) - It improves whole digestive system.
  • Dhaniya (Coriandrum sativum) - It is very common herb that subsides the symptoms of IBS such as gas, indigestion, acidity and constipation.
  • Pippali (Piper longum) - It provides the strength to whole digestive system. It also increases strength of agni (fire) therefore it helps in relief from digestion related problems.
  • Jeerak (Cuminum cyminum) - It is useful in abdominal pain and acidity.

DOSE- 2 capsules twice daily with plain water after meals.

2. Kutajghana Vati

These tablets are prepared from herb Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysentrica). This herb has great medicinal importance which help to balance the all three doshas in body. It has medicinal properties like carminative, aphrodisiac etc which make it useful for chronic diarrhea, dysentery, intestinal worms. It stimulates the digestive fire (agni) and restores proper digestion by normalizing the function of garhani. So it relieves dysentery, diarrhea, digestive problems, IBS.

DOSE- 2 tablets twice daily with plain water after meals.

3. Sanjivani Vati

It is another effective formulation of Planet Ayurveda that means " One, who gives life". These tablets are very effective against digestive problems. The herbs used in this formulation have ability to pacify the vata and kapha dosha in body.

These tablets contains different herbs which are explained below:

  • Guduchi (Tinospora cardifola) - This herb has ability to enhance the immunity of body and balance all three doshas. It provides the strength to the body to fight against different health health conditions like indigestion.
  • Ardraka (Zingiber officinale) - It also enhances the immunity of body.
  • Vidanga (Embelia ribes) - It is carminative and digestive stimulant in nature.
  • Vacha (Acorus calamus) - It contains bitter substance called acorin that has positive effect on digestive system and nervous system.
  • Shudh bhallatak (Semecarpus anacadium) - It is the one of the most fast acting herb in Ayurveda. It works in conditions like GIT problems, skin problems etc.
  • Shudh vatsanbh (Aconium ferox) - It balances all three doshas especially vata and Kapha. It improves strength, digestion and other conditions.
  • Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) - It enhances the immunity and clears all toxins from body therefore it fight against all health issues.
  • Bhbhitaki (Terminalia bellerica) - It is good for various digestive problems as it act as laxative.
  • Haritaki (Termianlia chebula) - It acts as natural laxative which is used for constipation and abdominal gas.

3. Pitta Balance

These are herbal capsules which help to balance the pitta dosha in body and provide relief from pitta related problems.

It is a combination of natural compounds which are explained below:

  • Praval pisti (Coral calcium) - It is rich source of calcium that helps in balancing pitta dosha and provides calcium to body.
  • Akik pisti (Agate calcium) - It helps to balance the vata and pitta doshas and related problems.
  • Jawar mohar pisti (calcium compound) - It is the source of calcium which is effective in GIT problems.
  • Kamdhudha rasa (calcium compound) - It keeps the digestive system healthy by balancing pitta dosha.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE SUGGESTIONS

Along with Ayurvedic treatment one should take care of proper diet and lifestyle for accurate results because diet plays a crucial role in management of any disease. For the treatment of IBS diet should be balanced and healthy.

  • Avoid fried foods, meats, oil, dairy foods and other fatty foods.
  • Do not eat spicy foods, as they trigger spasms in your intestines leading to diarrhea.
  • Quit smoking, drinking alcohol.
  • Avoid consumption of caffeine, and carbonated beverages.
  • Enhance the intake of fiber, and have foods like beans, oatmeal, apples, strawberries and grapes. Drink more water daily.
  • Use of Ginger is very good.
  • Practice yoga and pranayama daily
  • Do exercise on regular basis.

Home Remedies for Digestion Problems - Natural Treatment

Abdominal Pain

1. Fennel Seeds:

  • Fennel seeds have antimicrobial and pain reducing properties. A good home remedy for abdominal Pain Fennel seeds can be used as:
  • In cup of hot water add one teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds. Let it stand for 8 to 10 minutes, allow it to cool and strain it.
  • You can add a little honey and drink it slowly.
  • Alternatively - After your meals, chew 1/2-1 teaspoon of fennel seeds.

2. Chamomile Tea:

Chamomile is a natural way to soothe the abdominal pain by relaxing the muscles of stomach.

Method:

  • Take a teaspoon of dried chamomile in a cup.
  • Pour boiling water in this cup and cover it.
  • Allow it to stand for 15 minutes, strain
  • You can add lemon juice or honey as per your taste.
  • Drink the tea slowly.
  • Have this Tea two or three times a day.

Anorexia (Loss of Appetite)

1. Oranges:

  • Oranges are effective in treating the Anorexia by boosting and cleaning the digestive system.
  • Eat 2-3 Oranges daily.
  • Alternatively - Orange juice can be another option. You can add little rock salt, lemon juice and a bit of black pepper powder to enhance its taste.
  • Follow it for at least a week to get back your appetite.

2. Ginger:

  • Ginger is very effective home remedy for to enhance your hunger.
  • Take small piece of ginger without its peel and chop it. Add a pinch of rock salt to the chopped ginger and mix well. Consume it 30 minutes before your meal for few weeks.
  • Another is that you add a few drops of lemon and a pinch of both asafetida and black pepper powder to paste of ginger. Consume it daily in the morning empty stomach.
  • Or you can have ginger Tea.

Gas

1. Cinnamon:

  • Cinnamon helps to soothe your stomach and prevents further formation of gas.
  • To a cup of warm milk add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Stir it properly and drink it.
  • You can even add little honey to it.
  • Alternatively - Cinnamon tea can be another option in which cinnamon powder is added to a cup of boiling water. Let it stand for a few minutes and then drink it.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar:

  • Apple cider vinegar will make your stomach acidic enough to digest food and relieve both gas and indigestion. This home remedy soothes the stomach and provides instant relief. In case apple cider vinegar is not available, regular vinegar can be used.
  • In a glass of warm water add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar. Then allow the water to cool to room temperature, and then have it.

Indigestion

1. Lime and Ginger:

  • Mix two spoons of lime and ginger juice along with honey in a glass of warm water.
  • You can have it after a heavy meal.

2. Cumin Seeds:

  • Take 1 tablespoon cumin seeds and it to 2 cups of water.
  • Then boil it for 5 min and allow it to cool. Strain it.
  • Drink it everyday.

Vomiting

1. Ginger:

  • Ginger is effective for digestive system as it blocks unwanted secretion inside the stomach that can cause vomiting, it acts as natural anti-emetic agent.
  • Take a teaspoon of ginger juice and lemon juice. Mix it and consume it many times in a day.
  • Alternatively - You can even try for ginger tea with a little honey.
  • Or you can have some fresh ginger slices with or without honey.

2. Cloves:

  • Cloves are good to use in vomiting. Its aroma and flavor can provide you immediate relief from vomiting.
  • In a one cup of water boil 6-8 cloves. Put it to simmer for ten minutes. Then strain this water mix and drink it whenever you feel like vomiting.

Diarrhoea

1. Curd:

  • Curd is good for diarrhea as it contains bacteria that destroys the bad bacteria causing diarrhea.
  • You can have curd with mashed banana also to help cure diarrhea.
  • Alternatively - Curd and teaspoon of ginger juice and mango juice is effective in controlling diarrhea.
  • Curd with roasted cumin seeds can be consumed after meal, it prevents and cures diarrhea.

Flatulence

1. Ginger:

  • Ginger is effective in Flatulence as it stimulates digestion so food won't stay in your intestines.
  • You can have Ginger Tea.
  • Take a teaspoon of grated fresh ginger, then pour a cup of boiling water over it and let it soak for 5 minutes. Strain the tea and allow to cool it before you drink.
  • Ginger tea is also available as tea bags.
  • Even fresh ginger slices soaked in lime juice after meals are helpful in Flatulence.

2. Fennel Seeds:

  • Fennel seeds are good for digestion of food as it relieves you from gas problem.
  • Its tea can be prepared – Adding ½ teaspoon of fennel seeds in 1 cup boiling water for ten minutes. Then consume this tea.
  • You can chew a teaspoonful of fennel seeds after meals.

Constipation

1. Lemon Tea:

  • Lemon is one of the most effective remedy for Constipation as it acts as stimulant for digestive system and flushes the things out.
  • Take a half lemon and extract its juice, and add it to a glass of warm water. You can even add a pinch of rock salt or ½ teaspoon of table salt and a little honey to it.
  • Have it in the morning empty stomach or even in the evening.
  • Follow this remedy daily and get good results.

2. High Fiber Diet:

  • Fiber diet acts as cleaner, washing out food and waste particles from your digestive tract and soaking up water.
  • Foods high in fiber include many vegetables, fruits, fresh oatmeal, almonds, bran cereals, beans, lentils, barley and dried fruits like raisins soaked in water etc.

Piles

1. Radish Juice:

  • Radish juice is best home remedy for piles.
  • Drink Radish juice starting with ¼ of a cup and shift it to ½ of a cup gradually for period of 1 month.
  • Radish paste mixed with honey can be applied locally to get relief from pain.

2. High Fiber Diet:
