ABSTRACT

Inflammation and pain in legs and feet can occur due to various health problems and injuries. It happens mainly in people who run for long periods of time. As this leads to minor injuries to the bones and muscles which leads to inflammation, stiffness and pain-like symptoms. We are going to discuss 2 most common health concerns coming in runners nowadays that are Plantar Fasciitis and Shin Splints in this article along with its Ayurvedic management.

Plantar fasciitis/Shin splints

INTRODUCTION

Plantar Fasciitis is a condition which causes pain in the bottom of the foot. It causes pain when an affected person stands up on the affected foot in the morning or stands up after sitting for a long time. This condition, if continuous for long term can lead to calcium deposition in the irritated area which causes heel spur. Shin splints are also known as medial tibial syndrome which refers to pain that runs on the edge of shin bone in front of the lower leg. After long term running the lower legs become overworked which causes pain.

CAUSES OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS AND SHIN SPLINTS

Following are the causes of Plantar Fasciitis and Shin Splints:

  • Unfitted shoes
  • Hard sole shoes
  • Foot structure
  • Overuse of legs
  • Excessive pressure over arch of foot
  • Excessive running
  • Excessive jogging
  • Excessive walking

SYMPTOMS OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS AND SHIN SPLINTS

Let us know about the symptoms of both:

Plantar Fasciitis:

  • Stabbing pain near heel and bottom of foot
  • Stiffness in morning
  • Pain in morning
  • Pain after long standing

Shin Splints:

  • Pain on the edge of the shin bone
  • Tenderness on the edge of shin bone
  • Swelling in the lower leg
  • Pain after running
  • Pain after exercising

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS AND SHIN SPLINTS

As per Ayurveda there is no specific relation for Plantar Fasciitis and Shin Splints. As both these conditions occur with overuse of legs in running, walking, exercising and other activities. So as per Ayurveda both these are caused by ati vyayam (excessive exercise), ati adhav (excessive walking), etc. These causes further lead to aggravation of vata dosha which causes pain and tenderness in the heel in case of Plantar Fasciitis and along the side of shin bone in shin splints. So the basic line of treatment as per Ayurveda to manage both these conditions are nidan parivarjana (keep yourself away from the causes) and pacifying vata dosha.

Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis and Shin Splints in Ayurveda

ABSTRACT

Plantar fasciitis and Shin Splints both involve lower leg pain and inflammation due to overuse of the lower leg. The causes for both can be similar and the result can also be the same, but the site of pain may vary from each in a minute. Both these injuries are commonly seen in Sports persons. Here in this article, we will get to know the causes and symptoms of these two injuries. Also, we will spot the main difference between them and ayurvedic remedies for the management and recovery from such injuries.

Plantar Fasciitis, Shin Splints

INTRODUCTION

Shin Splints also known as medial tibial stress syndrome, are defined as pain along the shin bone (Tibia) in the lower leg. Pain is caused by the overuse of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is of two types-

  • Anterior Shin Splints
  • Posterior Shin Splints

The sites of pain in both types are different. Pain down the front of the leg indicates Anterior Shin Splints and the pain down the inside of the leg indicates posterior Shin Splints. The overuse of the lower legs causes muscles, and connective tissues to rupture that causes painful splints. Overuse of legs is common among sports persons who are involved in strenuous activities such as football players, athletes, basketball players, and all sports that involve more usage of legs, which can put extended force on the shin bone and corresponding muscles.

Plantar fasciitis also known as policeman's heel is defined as muscle pain with inflammation on the bottom of the foot that connects the heel bone to the toe. The pain is stabbing in nature. The pain reduces as you walk and tends to decrease while continuing walking, while the pain will aggravate on prolonged standing or sudden movement after long rest. The injury is recovered by ice patching, and other conservative methods, while in rare cases arthroscopic surgery is recommended. That is done based on your symptoms and severity.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

According to Ayurveda the over-usage and overstaining of muscles aggravate Vata dosha which will disbalance the Pitta and Kapha dosha. All these tridoshas together will lead to pain, tenderness, and stiffness in that particular area. Treatment modalities involve the intake of naturally and purely prepared Planet Ayurveda's herbal medications, application of our medicated oils, and following the guide and diet recommendations of our expert Ayurvedic Doctors.

  • Pain worsens in the morning
  • Pain is stabbing in nature

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is confirmed based on the-

  • Medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Location of pain
  • The severity of pain and tenderness
  • X-Ray - can show a bone spur

TREATMENT

Most people recover on their own in a few months with conservative treatment. While in some cases the condition may worsen on left untreated.

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Physical therapies
  • Night splints
  • Canes
  • Crutches
  • Walking boots for temporary methods to support the leg
