Abstract
Gleaming skin, hair, nails (GSHN) formula is formulated by MD Ayurveda expert from Planet Ayurveda. It contains various herbs such as, Manjistha Extract (Rubia cordifolia), Pit Papda Extract (Fumaria officinalis), Ghritkumari Extract (Aloe barbadensis) and Sariva Extract (Hemidesmus indicus) respectively. These herbs have properties that aid in preventing eczema, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-androgenic, detoxifying, wound healing, blood purifying and antimicrobial effects. It also promotes the health of skin, nails and hair, and acts as a natural detoxifier thus removing toxins from the body. The structure of human skin is very complex which consists of a number of layers and tissue components with many important functions. Skin is considered to be the first line of defence, hence it is first exposed to the disease. Eczema can affect not only the skin, but also on the scalp and at times, the nails. It might result in symptoms such as redness, itchiness, dryness, nail pitting, grooves or other nail deformities. On the skin, it can cause scaly patches, inflammation, cracks, bumps, redness or blisters depending upon the type of eczema.
Modern dermatology has made remarkable progress, but there is no permanent solution for eczema. Symptomatic treatments like steroids are commonly used, but they can lead to serious side effects over time like osteoporosis, nephrotoxicity and skin cancer. In this regard, Ayurveda offers herbal treatment for the symptoms of eczema and balances the body which is crucial for over well-being. Ayurveda fosters overall health and wellness by aiming the society with the objective to cure diseases and prevent them. So, the Gleaming Skin Hair Nails formula, aimed at eliminating toxins from the body, focuses on rejuvenation and overall well-being.
Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Gleaming skin, hair, nails formula in treating eczema. An open clinical trial was conducted among 37 participants aged between 10-55 years with atopic eczema. GSHN was given a dose of 1-2 capsules twice daily, with plain water, recommended after meals for 12 weeks. The present study seeks to explore the Ayurveda approach by using the GSHN formula that is presently practiced for the management of eczema.
Introduction
Eczema, also referred to as Atopic dermatitis (AD), is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that results in inflammation, redness and itching. Eczema has become a significant concern nowadays, largely due to modern lifestyle and stress filled living. Atopic dermatitis affects 1-5% of the World population and is a common disease that usually begins in childhood, but can affect people of any age. Eczema is a skin disorder characterized by dry, red, itchy and scaly patches which leads to discomfort and irritation. It also affects skin, hair and nails.
Skin
The most typical signs of eczema are red, itchy, dry, scaly patches on the skin, commonly found on the face, elbows, hands, knees and neck. These can worsen with exposure to irritants like detergents, soaps or harsh fabrics.
Scalp (Hair)
Scalp eczema, characterized as dandruff like flakes, itching and redness, which affects the scalp.
Nails
Eczema can also affect the nails, leading to symptoms like pitting, ridges (grooves) or alterations in thickness and colour, especially in severe eczema.
Both Genetic and environmental factors are believed to contribute to the development of eczema.
Genetic Factors
Eczema has a strong genetic link, often seen in individuals with a family history of eczema, asthma or allergies. Several genes linked to eczema have been identified, including those that play a role in skin barrier function and the immune system. Mutations in genes such as filaggrin, which is crucial for preserving a healthy skin barrier, are closely associated with eczema development. Genes that influence the immune system response, especially those involved in allergic reactions, can also play a role in increasing the risk of eczema.
Environmental Factors
Environmental factors also contribute to the onset of eczema. Individuals with eczema have a defect in their skin barrier function, leading to greater water loss and susceptibility to environmental irritants and allergens. Allergens like pollen, dust mites, mould and pet dander can activate eczema. Exposure to detergents, harsh soaps and other irritants can disrupt the skin barrier and intensify eczema symptoms. Dry weather and psychological stress are the additional environmental factors that can trigger eczema.
Therefore, a clinical study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Gleaming skin, hair, nails formula in selected 37 patients experiencing various symptoms of eczema. In this article, an attempt was made to evaluate the role of Gleaming skin, hair, nails formula in the management of eczema.
Materials And Methods
A clinical trial was performed in 37 patients diagnosed with eczema. They were enrolled from OPD of the Planet Ayurveda and the informed consent was taken from every patient before beginning the intervention.
Drug
The herbal medicine used for intervention was formulated by an MD expert of Planet Ayurveda, named as Gleaming skin, hair, nails (GSHN) formula. GSHN contains various herbal ingredients mentioned in table 1. All these herbal ingredients possess various properties like anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, wound healing, detoxifying, blood purifying and antimicrobial effects.

Sign And Symptoms
Eczema symptoms vary with all different forms of the condition. Although every type of eczema has different symptoms, there are certain signs that are common for all, including redness of the skin, itching, swelling and skin lesions sometimes with oozing and scarring. Also, the area of the skin on which the symptoms appear tends to be different with every type of atopic dermatitis (AD), whether on the wrist, neck, forearm, back, feet, thigh, knees, face, ankle or palm. While the location may differ, the main symptom of this condition is itching of the skin. Symptoms of this type of AD may be very intense and may come and go. Although the symptoms of AD vary from person to person, the most common symptoms are itchy, dry and red skin. Typical affected skin areas include the back of the knees, folds of the arm, wrists, knees, hands and face.
Observations
A total of 37 patients were included in the trial. Out of which, 33 patients completed the treatment, while 4 of them didn’t follow the instructions and missed to attend the visits, so they were regarded as dropouts. Among the registered patients, the majority of the patients (48%) were in the 10-22 age range; 28% were between 23-35 years old and 24% fell in the 35-55 age group.
Ayurveda Recommendations For Managing Eczema
Dietary Recommendations
All the chosen participants recommended a nourishing, plant based diet, full of essential nutrients. They also advised staying hydrated with calming drinks and avoiding processed foods, dairy, spicy meals and excessive sugar. They were instructed to add ginger, turmeric and leafy greens in their diet.
Lifestyle Modifications
Stress and eczema are closely linked. Ayurveda promotes basic yoga practices to set things in motion. So, regular practice was suggested to them, it not only improves blood flow but also induces mental calmness.
Practical Tips
Avoiding harsh chemicals, allergens and irritants is crucial in managing eczema. All the chosen patients were advised to use gentle, natural skincare products and detergents and were encouraged to wear cotton gloves at night to avoid scratching during sleep.
Treatment Plan
According to a specific line of treatment, all the patients were selected and planned for eczema treatment. All patients began medication with a dosage of 1-2 capsules twice daily, with plain water, after meals for a duration of 3 months. Only Ayurveda drug intervention (GSHN formula) was given to the patients and they were advised to strictly follow the diet.
Diagnostic Focus And Assessment
By observing the symptoms of the patient, it was concluded that all the patients were suffering with the symptoms of eczema. The cause of eczema among all the patients was unknown but presumed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. All laboratory and biochemical investigations were normal. All patients complained of recurrent skin rashes over the extensor surface of the foot, redness, itching, blistering, skin edema, oozing, cracking, dryness and bleeding. In some patients, itching was so prominent that the patient was unable to sleep due to this.
Results
By just following the proper Ayurveda management of Gleaming Skin, hair, nails (GSHN) formula with proper dietary and social lifestyle. All the selected participants got almost complete relief from eczema symptoms. The Patient adhered to the intervention for the total duration of 3 months with regular follow ups and following all the instructions given to them.
They were completely relieved from all the symptoms in just 3 months which they had suffered from for so long. It was found that chief complaints such as itching, redness, dryness, oozing, skin rashes and cracking, those which were initially present in all the cases, were gradually improved and were found to be decreased in all age grouped patients. Compliance with the trial medication was evaluated at each visit during the follow according to the protocol, no adverse medicine reactions or adverse events were reported during the treatment. In simple words we can say that, with the use of GSHN formula, highly significant results were obtained in patients after the intervention.
Discussion
In this study involving 37 patients, eczema was seen more prevalent in the age group of 20-32 and 40-51 years. Majority of the patients were females (52%) which might have been due to continuous history of allergen exposure (detergents, soaps etc.) or a history of change in environment. A few of them were allergic to mud which they used for cleaning utensils.
Disease prevalence was also seen in farmers (12%) which might have been due to allergens in plants or fertilizers or any other agents; and in industrial workers (5%) due to exposure to chemicals. Most of the patients (30%) had an allergy to exposure to dust, cold and smoke; few of them were allergic to food products like eggs, sesame and dairy. All these patients had allergic sensitization and were more prone to eczema.
After the intervention of the Gleaming Skin hair Nails formula, there was 87% of relief in symptoms like redness, itching, dryness etc. in all the selected patients. Gleaming Skin hair Nails formula was efficient in relieving inflammation, itching, oozing etc. thereby, making the skin clear. In some of the patients, the skin had become clear within the 5th visit. Thus combination of herbal ingredients present in Gleaming Skin hair Nails formula, brings out excellent results with relief in eczema symptoms.
Conclusion
Thus it can be concluded that, Gleaming Skin hair Nails formula herbal formulation is highly effective in the management of eczema. Out of 33 patients who have completed the trial, symptoms like inflammation, redness and itching got reduced significantly and showed improvement after the treatment. In patients with recent-onset and who had very less surface area affected the skin became almost clear by fourth and fifth visit.
GSHN being an herbal formulation was good enough in reducing eczema symptoms and also rejuvenates the skin. Also, no serious side effects were reported by the patients throughout the study. Thus, herbal formulations have great potential to cure different kinds of skin diseases. Compared to allopathic treatments, they have relatively low costs and can be used safely without any side effects.
All the case reports demonstrate the treatment of eczema completely with Gleaming skin, hair, nails formula and found to be safe, effective and acceptable treatment in skin diseases, especially in eczema.
