How Ayurveda Can Treat Pemphigus Vulgaris?

Pemphix means blisters, pemphigus is a disease that is characterized by blisters which are present in the epidermis and mucosa layer, it occurs due to the destruction of healthy cells by our immune system. These blisters may be present on the skin, in the nose, mouth, eyes, ears and genitals. It is a chronic and one among the rare diseases. Pemphigus is of various types, that depend upon the site of blister formed like – pemphigus vulgaris (Usually blisters present within the mouth), pemphigus foliaceus (Blisters or sores on the face and scalp), pemphigus vegetans (Thick sores in the groin and armpit), IgA pemphigus (Blisters affects the whole body but identified by pustules), paraneoplastic pemphigus (These sores may also present throughout the body but it is a rare pemphigus usually it occurs in people with cancer). All these pemphigus start from a particular site but as day's passes, it affects the whole body.

According to Ayurveda, it is one among Twak vikar's that can be categorized under "Kshudra kushtha's'. The prime reason for all the skin diseases according to ayurveda is our vitiated Pitta dosha but it is always associated with other doshas. Our mandagni is the reason for the vitiation of these doshas.

WHAT CAUSES PEMPHIGUS VULGARIS?

The etiology of this disease is still unknown. But some causative factors that are responsible for pemphigus are as follow -

  • Prime culprit of this disease is our immune system – It is already stated that pemphigus is an auto immune disease where our immune system becomes unable to distinguish between the antigens and our healthy cells, thus, our immune system starts producing antibodies against the healthy cells and destructs them.
  • Improper diet and lifestyle are the major cause of all the diseases in our body.
  • Medications – Long term use of corticosteroids and ACE inhibitors are the cause of this disease.
  • Genetic predisposition

WHO ARE AT HIGH RISK?

  • All the individuals who are suffering from any auto immune disease.
  • Whoever suffering from any kind of allergies they are more prone to develop this disease.
  • Parental history of any kind of skin infections or allergies increases risk of Pemphigus vulgaris.
  • Those who are addicted to alcohol and tobacco are likely to develop it.
  • Incidence of this disease is high in Europe and it is most common in middle-aged and older adults but can affect any age group.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF PEMPHIGUS VULGARIS?

The cardinal sign of this disease is blisters. These blisters are associated with –

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Burning sensation
  • Usually, blisters are painful but sometimes they may be painless.
  • Hyperesthesia
  • Laceration
  • Pus filled (Pustules)
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Erosion or ulcerations
  • Discoloration of skin
  • Weight loss ultimately leads to malnutrition.

IS IT CONTAGIOUS?

No, it is a non-contagious disease that does not spread from person to person. But it is a hereditary disease that may run from generation to generation.

HOW TO DIAGNOSE PEMPHIGUS VULGARIS?

On a clinical basis we cannot diagnose this disease properly, some investigations are required to evaluate the cause and to confirm the diagnosis. It includes various macroscopic and microscopic evaluations, a few of them are -

  • Microscopic evaluation by biopsy of blisters
  • Complete blood count
  • ESR (Erythrocyte sedimentation rate)
  • Immunoglobulin assay

WHAT IS THE LINE OF MANAGEMENT IN AYURVEDA?

Here, Ayurveda took lead in managing autoimmune diseases as compared to all the alternate system of medicines, Ayurveda has much more wide availability of medicines and measures to manage the improper or weak immune system. The management strategy of pemphigus vulgaris goes as -

  • Management of the immune system by Rasayana therapy.
  • Detoxify the body
  • Improves Agni
  • Lifestyle and dietary management

TREATMENT AS PER AYURVEDA ASPECT

Ayurveda can deal this disease with its both the therapies Shamana and Shodhana. Shodhana therapy helps to eliminate the toxins from the body and minimize the chance of reoccurrence as often skin disease relapse quite often. And shaman therapy helps to pacify the symptoms and increases immunity.

Shodhana therapy includes Panchakarma procedures, those procedures which are helpful in pemphigus, they are – Virechana, Vaman, Raktamokshana and basti along with Sthanik Abhyanga.

3. Ashwagandha Capsules

Dosage: 1 capsule twice daily with plain water, after meals.

4. Radiant Skin, Hair & Nails Formula

This is a unique preparation of Planet Ayurveda, these capsules contain Rubia cordifolia, Fumaria officinalis, Swertia Chiretta, Aloe barbadensis. All these herbs help to restore the normal texture, tone and color of the skin, hence beneficial in all skin disorders.

5. Navkarshik Churna

Dosage: 1 teaspoon twice daily with plain water, after meals.

6. External Application

Neem oil or Nirgundi oil both are helpful in such conditions as they help to heal the outer lining of eroded skin and pacify itching and pain.

As per our classics the foods which are beneficial to cure skin diseases they are –

diet in skin diseases, ancient reference, shloka

Reference – Charaka samhita / Chikitsa sthana / Kushtha chikitsa / Chapter no. 7 / Shloka no. 82

The meaning of this shloka goes as - Light, green leafy vegetables, bitter foods like bitter gourd, are beneficial in skin diseases. Prefer to take ghrita and food items that are processed with bhalataka, triphala and neem.

Even You Can Use

  • Vegetables - Spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, beetroot, beans, lentils, peas, cucumber, etc.
  • Pulses – Munga daal, arhar daal, etc.
  • Fruits – Figs, pears, peaches, coconut, apples, avocados, etc.
  • Dry fruits – Almonds and walnuts
  • Oil – Use mustard and sesame oil.
  • Spices – Turmeric, basil, coriander, cinnamon

The Diet That Should Be Avoided

  • Avoid spicy sour and fermented foodstuffs.
  • Avoid non-vegetarian, bakery products and packed foods.
  • Avoid milk and milk products
