It is a mental disorder that is characterized with delusions, hallucinations and some other cognitive difficulties. • Certain medications(anti-psychosis drugs)

There are some medications that are most commonly used:

  • Risperidone (Risperdal) - less sedating than other atypical antipsychotics. There are side effects like Weight gain and diabetes, but chances of occurrence are quite less.
  • Olanzapine (Zyprexa) – this medication is helpful in dealing with negative symptoms of schizophrenia. But this can cause side effects that can lead to serious weight gain and the development of diabetes.
  • Quetiapine (Seroquel) –this is also associated with the same risk of gaining weight and diabetes.
  • Ziprasidone (Geodon) –this medication is also used in the treatment of this problem. Though the risk of weight gain and diabetes is lower than other atypical antipsychotics. However, it might contribute to cardiac arrhythmia.
  • Clozapine (Clozaril) –this medication is effective for patients who have been resistant to treatment. It helps in preventing suicidal behaviors in patients with schizophrenia. The risk of weight gain and diabetes is significant.
  • Haloperidol - an antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia. It has a long-lasting effect (weeks).
