The body consists of central nervous system which control functions such as sweating, skin flushing, and response of pupil to stimuli. Harlequin syndrome usually occurs due some effects on the automic nervous system which causes hindrance in the performance of various functions performed by central nervous system and further leads to asymmetric sweating and flushing of skin on some parts of the body that includes body parts such as face arms and chest.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

  • Flushing and sweating of the face, neck and upper chest region
  • This mostly occurs due to exposure to heat
  • Tearing of eyes
  • Nasal discharge
  • Abnormal contraction of pupils
  • Weakness in neck muscles
  • Dropping of one side of upper eyelid

DIAGNOSIS

  • Consistent signs and symptoms of the condition can help in the diagnosis so it is done by clinical observation.
  • Sometimes MRI is also suggested by doctors.
  • Tilt table test, orthostatic blood pressure measurement, head-up test, valsalva maneuver, thermoregulatory sweat test, tendon reflex test.
  • In some cases CT scan of the heart and lungs may be suggested by the doctor.

TREATMENT

There isn’t any specific treatment regimen for the condition. Surgical intervention is recommended is certain cases. When it’s possible for the doctor to spot the impaired nerve, then the damage can be rectified. In this process, a stellate ganglion block is conducted. For the stellate ganglion block, a local anesthetic is administered; it has been proved that this technique can reduce the duration and the intensity of the symptoms of the harlequin syndrome. Though this technique is rather new, is is quite effective in the management of the disorder.
