Herbal Remedies for Diverticulitis - Signs, Symptoms, Complications, Diet & Treatment

The inflammation or infection of diverticula is generally termed as Diverticulitis. Diverticula are the small pouches present over the walls of intestines. The diverticula formation is something benign, which is generally referred as Diverticulosis. The term diverticulitis includes two polarities from a small abscess to bowel perforation.

The diverticula formation can be anywhere in your gastro intestinal tract but more common to descending and sigmoid colon. Although the first section of small intestine is very frequent to diverticula, they seldom makes nuisance.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF DIVERTICULITIS

Have you ever wondered why one is not bothered over diverticulosis unless they are diagnosed with diverticulitis? This is because in most of the cases one won't be aware of diverticulosis, as it rarely shows any symptoms. It is not much painful enough to get you consult your physician. But in some it may show symptoms like:-

  • Cramping over left side of the stomach. But it will be relieved on passing gas or by bowel movement
  • Bright red bloody stool

But the severity of diverticulitis is bit more serious. It is usually presented with too severe abdominal pain and fever.

Diverticulitis can be of two types, either acute or chronic. The acute diverticulitis may manifest as one or more attacks and infection. But in chronic type, even though the infection or inflammation may subside, but will never clean up completely. The ultimate outcome of diverticulitis is Bowel Obstruction. This will end up as some serious symptoms including:-

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Thin stools
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Bloating
  • Severe abdominal pain

If the obstruction lasts for longer time without management, there is an increase in pain & tenderness which can cause severe nausea and vomiting.

COMPLICATIONS OF DIVERTICULITIS

The unattended diverticulitis can seriously damage your entire system, and may end up with surgery. The major complication of diverticulitis includes:-

  • Abscess – It usually seen around the infected diverticula. The chances of developing peritonitis are more, which is a life threatening situation and requires immediate attention.
  • Scarring of Intestinal Walls – This can often lead to intestinal blockage or stricture
  • Fistulas – Most common begins in the large intestine and get connected with urinary bladder, infecting your adjacent kidneys. But the connection is less common with skin or vagina.
  • Severe bleeding which can only be compromised with blood transfusion

  • Vidanga – Embelia ribes
  • Ginger – Zingiber Officianale
  • Pippali – Piper Longum
  • Hareetaki – Terminalia Chebula
  • Amalaki – Emblica Officianalis
  • Vacha – Aacorus Calamus
  • Guduci – Tinospora Cordifolia
  • Purified Bhallataka – Semicarpus Anacardium
  • Purified Vatsanabha – Aconitum Ferox

The presence of Vidanga in Sanjivani Vati helps to wash out the harmful bacteria from the gut.

Dosage – 2 tablets two times a day after meals with lukewarm water.

3. Agnitundi Vati

This is one of the most effective and most satisfactory medicine for Chronic Diverticulitis. Agnitundi Vati helps to achieve the intestinal health. It is a great intestinal cleaner and constipation reliever. It is an excellent choice of remedy for weak intestines and bloating. The ingredients include:-

  • Hareetaki – Terminalia Chebula

  • Pippali – Piper Longum

Dosage – 2 tablets two times a day after meals with lukewarm water.

4. Vatsakadi Churna

This contains a mixture of Ayurveda drugs which have excellent ulcer healing properties. It is a digestive stimulant, carminative, promoter of health and also has ulcer healing properties. Vatsakadi choorna helps in intestinal cleaning and helps to decrease the symptoms like nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The ingredients include:-

  • Kutaja – Holarrhena Antidysentrica
  • Sounf – Foeniculum Vulgare
  • Coriander – Coriander Sativum
  • Nagarmotha – Cyprus Rotundus
  • Pomegranate – Punica Granatum
  • Cardamom – Elatteria Cardamom
  • Jaipal – Myristica Fragrans

Dosage - 1 tsp twice daily after meals with lukewarm water or boil 1 tsp churna in 400 ml of water, reduce it to 50 ml. strain it and leave the residue. Make fresh every time.

DIET FOR DIVERTICULITIS

As the play station for diverticulitis is limited to your GIT, more emphasis should be given to your diet.

The diet chart for diverticulitis begins with clear liquids for the first few days, which include broth, fruit juices without pulp, water etc.

Once you feel better, you can start with a low fiber diet that includes cooked fruits without skin and seeds, low fiber cereals, eggs, poultry etc.
