Herbal Remedies to Get Rid of Flatulence (Excessive Gas)

Flatulence

Flatulence or intestinal gas means having too much stomach gas (waste gas which is produced during digestion) released from the anus with embarrassing sound and/or odor.

CAUSES OF STOMACH GAS IN THE DIGESTIVE TRACT CAN BE AS FOLLOWS

  • Swallowed air
  • Breakdown of undigested foods
  • Intolerance to Lactase
  • Mal-absorption of certain foods items.

Basically the gas which gets generated and released happens due to microbial breakdown of foods. In that case gases like carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane are generated and released. This odor gets released due to skatole and sulfur-containing substances.

1. Ginger

  • Ginger is effective in Flatulence as it stimulates digestion so food won't stay in your intestines.
  • You can have Ginger Tea.
  • Take a teaspoon of grated fresh ginger, then pour a cup of boiling water over it and let it soak for 5 minutes.
  • Strain the tea and allow to cool it before you drink.
  • Ginger tea is also available as tea bags.
  • Even fresh ginger slices soaked in lime juice after meals are helpful in Flatulence.

2. Fennel Seeds

  • Fennel seeds are good for digestion of food as it relieves you from gas problem.
  • Its tea can be prepared – Adding ½ teaspoon of fennel seeds in 1 cup boiling water for ten minutes. Then
  • Consume this tea.
  • You can chew a teaspoonful of fennel seeds after meals.

3. Fenugreek Seeds

  • Soak few seeds, half to one tsp in a glass of water for 3 to 4 hours. Strain and drink.
  • Roast few seeds, powder and store them. Take half to 1 tsp with water after your heavy meal.

WHAT'S IS THE PROGNOSIS FOR A PERSON WITH EXCESS OF FLATULENCE OR GAS?

Majority of people with flatulence problem have a good to excellent prognosis only if they can change their dietary and food habits and also do use over-the-counter anti-gas drugs. Patients who face serious complications with flatulence do have a good prognosis because they might need additional treatments for reducing and eliminating the underlying cause.

  • Pippali (Piper Longum): Pippali’s use is in case of low appetite and indigestion. It also strengthens complete digestive system and stimulates liver, pancreas and intestines to secrete digestive juices.
  • Jeerak (Cuminum Cyminum): Cumin is the commonly used spice in the kitchen. Finds a great role in relieving abdominal pain due to gas and flatulence. The decoction of Cumin, Fennel, and Coriander gives relief from abdominal gas problem. Jeerak improves appetite as well.
