Incidence of Benign prostatic hyperplasia –
As
men age, the chance of BPH or prostate enlargement increases many fold. 25 % of
all men have some degree of prostatic enlargement as they reach their 50’s. When they reach their 80’s , over 90 % of the
men will have enlarged prostate. Only 10 % of these will be however symptomatic
and severe enough to require treatment.
Cause of Prostate Enlargement and treatment by
modern drugs
The
cause of enlarged prostate is mainly accumulation to di-hydrotestosterone in
the prostate which triggers growth of the cells.
An
enzyme 5 alpha reductatase converts testosterone into Di-hydrotestosterone
within cells. There are medicines which are given to block this enzyme. There
are other drugs like Finasteride, episteride used in modern medicine to help
symptomatically.
Another
category of drugs like prazosin, tamsulosin are alpha adrenergic blockers
causing relaxation of smooth muscles and help to relieve the prostate
obstruction. This is also a symptomatic treatment and needs to be taken daily.
All
the drugs are chemical based medicines which do have side effects in the long
run.
Symptoms
of Enlarged prostate Gland
The prostate gland covers
the pipe which is bringing the urine from the bladder to the penis. It impinges
upon this pipe and pressurizes it. This leads to symptoms like

Difficulty in urination
·
Hesitancy in urination
·
Dysuria – Painful urination
·
Dribbling
·
Increased frequency of urination, especially during
the night
·
Increased risk of infections
·
In complicated cases, urine back flow can
lead to swelling of kidneys and their failure.
Treatment of Enlarged prostate in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, the prostate
gland is called “Ashthila” and prostatic
enlargement can be treated very effectively. There are certain herbal
formulations which are developed by ancient sages and used in Ayurvedic from
last 3000 years.
Kachnaar
Guggul - One of the
classical formulation is “kachnaar Guggul”. This is a blend of herbs like
Bauhinea variegate and commiphora mukul. The commiphora mukul is powerful
anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and helps to stop the abnormal growth of cells. The herb Kachnaar (
Bauhinea variegate) is a popular and effective anti-cancer herb and combined
with Guggul helps to shrink the prostate gland. It is also helpful in prostate
cancer. This active ingredient from the healing herb is very effective to
shrink tumors and fight all sorts of inflammatory processes going on inside the
body. We use standardized 95 % active

Prostate
Cancer

going to become cancerous. PSA levels of < 4ng/ ml have probability of
Cancer at about 10 %. If the PSA levels are more than 10 ng/ ml, the probability
increases to more than 50 %.
So regular monitoring of PSA
levels is must in case of enlarged prostate gland.
